Lydgate Manor, Horbury
Conversion Of Grade II Listed Building Back Into Residential use, With Significant External Restoration
Architecture 1B were commissioned to convert Lydgate Manor, a large Grade II detached office building, formerly a grand single dwelling dating back to the late C18, back into residential use.
The building had been rendered hiding the original stone fabric, and had a number of sever structural cracks that required exploring and remedial works to ensure the longevity of the heritage asset. The conservation strategy was agreed with the Client and Conservation Officer, to remove render on external walls in test areas allowing the condition of the historic fabric to be evaluated and the structural engineer to better assess the cracks. In this process it was discovered that the cill bands thought to be an original feature and included on the buildings List Description were found to be modern concrete additions. As such applications were made to Historic England to have them removed from the listing and were removed from building, ultimately restoring the historical architectural aesthetic while minimising the loss of fabric.
